The magical chambers of Gjirokastër

“Culture in 1 Minute” – Episode 26.

“The big room had six beautiful windows, as high as the father…She was the biggest service in the house…Mother washed and scrubbed the floorboards until they turned yellow like wax”, this is how she describes the “room [room] of friends” , the great writer, Ismail Kadare.
The houses of Gjirokastra are identity monuments of the city and what is known as “Gjirokastrite Oda [room]”, is the most important environment of the magnificent stone houses.

A patriarchal organization, it shows gender and social stratification since the medieval period. Learn more through the explanations of the “veteran” architect, Agron Doraci, who dedicated his life to the monuments of the city, up to the restoration of the house of the writer Ismail Kadare, which today has been turned into a museum.
